According to Greek mythology, Crocus, the beloved friend of the god Hermes, and the nymph Smilaia were two youths who were deeply in love before becoming the beautiful plants we know today. An innocent game, however, turned into a dramatic circumstance that was about to deprive them of the joy of love. The gods, though, decided that Crocus and Smilaia had to, by all means, pass to eternity. Therefore, let their wonderful yet, at the same time, tragic story, never be lost from storytelling. While these plants, which bear their names, are not only beautiful to behold, but they are beneficial to our health as well.
Through the myth of Crocus and Smilaia, children are taught the importance of true friendship and everlasting love. It also conveys the message that even when something dies, it is not lost forever, but it can still live on in our memories.
