This volume is the product of a conference of historians from Greece and Romania, which met at the National Research Foundation in Athens in September 2000. This was the first such meeting in thirty years. The one before it had taken place in Thessaloniki in 1970 and had focused on the Phanariote period in the Romanian principalities, bringing a fresh view on that common chapter in the historical trajectories of Romania and Greece, trying to move away from the nationalist stereotypes that had shaped mutual historical perceptions in the past.
