Since the early 1990s, when the southernmost unit of former Yugoslavia declared its independence as `Republic of Macedonia`, all things Macedonian have attracted considerable scholarly attention. As a result, a growing volume of publications enriched the academic discussion of phenomena that have long stirred political controversy. Part of this output ventured beyond traditional political and diplomatic approaches which empharized `security` and state interest. `Identity` issues, where individuals and human collectivities come to the forefront, received increasing attention.
