Περιγραφή

The work of Ernst Ziller constitutes a turning point in the architectural history of Greece. Throughout the latter half of the 19th, and early 20th century, the architect from Saxony who served his apprenticeship at Theophilus Hansen’s side and decided to live this life in Greece created buildings as numerous as they were unique; buildings conceived in the spirit of neoclassicism and eclecticism that was to leave its mark on Athens and other Greek cities. The current volume presents fifty of Ziller’s works. Covering a wide range of buildings, from mansions and villas to shops, markets and banks; from schools to grave monuments and churches, it aims to make them known to a wider public. The accompanying texts contain brief descriptions and commentaries on the buildings, and seek to convey the social context in which they were designed and built as well as their salient architectural features.
