The painting decoration of the large conference hall is presented in detail and depicts episodes from the life of Prometheus, the wise creator and benefactor of the human race. This is followed by an examination of the exterior pediment sculptures, in which the figure of Athena, the patroness of the arts, learning and sciences, plays a leading role.
Finally, the study investigates the iconographic presence of Athena and Prometheus as spiritual symbols throughout the world and across the centuries, from antiquity to the present day.
By presenting the entire iconographic decoration, the history of the Academy of Athens building itself is revealed, as are the individuals who played a pivotal role in constructing the modern Greek state’s foremost intellectual institution.
